What is a testimony?

The testimony of a Christian, is the "testimony of Jesus". When a person places their faith in the truth of Jesus, Jesus makes His home in that person's heart through the indwelling Holy Spirit of God. His Spirit empowers the person to bear witness about Jesus in their lives, testifying to the truth of who Jesus is, and who we are in light of Him (Revelation 12:17, Romans 8:16, Ephesians 3:17, John 14:23).

What is the purpose in sharing a testimony?

As Christians, we share our testimony in order to declare the truth of Jesus to a world who is in desperate need of a Savior. Our testimonies of Jesus are meant to bear witness to His truth, which in return joins us in Christ's ministry of reconciliation between a sinner and God (2 Corinthians 5:18-21).

What are the benefits of sharing a testimony?

Just as we see Jesus instruct a healed man to go and tell his friends what Jesus had done for Him, we as Christians are called to go into the world and share what Jesus has done, is doing, and promises to do for us. Our testimonies of Jesus point those who are outside of the abiding love of God, towards the only path to God found through Jesus. Our testimonies help to strengthen other believers to persevere in faithfulness even to the point of death. But also, the word of our testimony silences the accusations made by Satan to God against those who are already saved through the blood of Jesus (Mark 5:19, Revelations 12:10-11).
